Artisaan (Art-eh-sahn) is a small batch stationery brand founded and based in Connecticut on Munsee-Lenape + Wappinger Lands.
Artisaan is Black Woman owned.
Established in 2018, we started our bookbinding journey as a hobby on the side, in search of a creative outlet. We evolved into specializing in the ancient stabbinding method of binding that originated in 14th century China, later adapted by Japan. We used fabrics for covers, and hemp cord for binding. We have been lucky enough to do custom orders for many independent shops, museums, and others.
In 2022, our line "finally" expanded into wire bound books for a completely lay-flat affect, which many supporters had been asking for. Creating this line brought us back to our roots by working with Japanese bookcloth for the covers.
Throughout the years since our beginning, we have evolved in many ways through name changes, adjustments to our offerings, and taking research and development slow.
On a personal level, this craft we call Artisaan has been a therapeutic journey for our makers and has helped us come to conclusions through the meditation of handmade work.
We hope that every item you receive from us conveys the intention we found while making it.
